Proso millet or baragu (Kannada) (Panicum miliaceum) is thought to be one of the earliest cultivated grains, likely preceding wheat. It's center of origin is thought to be Egypt and Arabia and it was cultivated in what is now Turkey and southern Europe since prehistoric times. It is grown extensively in India, Japan, China, Egypt, Arabia and Western Europe.In India proso millet is largely grown in Madhya Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.  It is a rich source of calcium, having high amount of calcium in absorbable form which is essential for bone growth and maintenance. The phosphorus in Proso millet helps in cell building and genetic replication in the body. Its nutritional constituents make it a healthy diet for diabetes and for controlling obesity.
