Most of what you know carries straight over. The reads, the scorebook, the long tournament weekends, the cooler in the truck. Maybe she has played baseball herself, plenty of fastpitch players started as the only girl on a baseball roster, and the game only gets faster from here. Your family already speaks diamond.

What changes is the game itself, and the changes are the fun part. The field is tighter and the ball gets on you faster than the distances suggest. Windmill pitching is its own art, and a good rise ball will bend what you think you know about hitting. The pace is relentless in the best way.

The calendar surprise

In Georgia, school softball runs late July through October, one of a handful of states that play it in summer and fall. Travel softball’s main season runs spring through July, the same months as spring baseball, so a family with both plans one busy spring. Her school season starts after spring baseball ends.
