Flag football built her speed, her hands and her reads. Softball wants all three.

The quarterback’s release, the catch on the run, the first step that loses a defender, softball rewards every one of them. A shortstop reads the ball off the bat the way a defender reads a throw, and a runner rounding third makes the same call a ball carrier makes at the sideline.

One year, two games

Georgia plays school flag football from September into December and school softball from late July through October, so the two school seasons share the fall. Travel softball’s main season runs spring through July, clear of the flag season. A player who loves both can keep both.
